The Milwaukee Bucks have very high expectations this season because the acquisition of Damian Lillard in the summer heightened the need to win the 2023-24 NBA championship. Giannis Antetokounmpo is leading the charge for the team so far, as the Bucks hold a 46-25 record, but if they fail to deliver in the playoffs, there could be major changes coming to the roster that is built around Antetokounmpo and Lillard.

Khris Middleton - Via Trade

Credit: Jim Dedmon-USA TODAY Sports

Contract Status: $31,666,667 In 2024-25, $34,012,345 Player Option In 2025-26

2023-24 Season Statistics: 15.0 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 5.2 APG, 0.9 SPG, 0.3 BPG

Khris Middleton was brought back by the Bucks this summer on a pretty hefty deal as he is getting paid over $31 million next season. To be fair to him, Middleton is coming off an injury that derailed his season last year and seems to be in flux again this season. He is only posting 15.0 points per game and is no longer impacting the game as an All-Star who was once the second option behind Giannis Antetokounmpo.

If the Bucks fail to win an NBA championship and Middleton continues to show that he isn’t a star anymore, he could be dangled on the trading block. He is nearly 33 years old and Milwaukee cannot afford to waste seasons when Antetokounmpo and Lillard are on the team. Expect the Bucks to shop Middleton if he doesn’t perform in the postseason and there could be suitors for him.

Brook Lopez - Via Trade

Credit: Alonzo Adams-USA TODAY Sports

Contract Status: $23,000,000 In 2024-25

2023-24 Season Statistics: 12.5 PPG, 5.3 RPG, 1.7 APG, 0.6 SPG, 2.5 BPG

Brook Lopez is a perfect starting center in the modern NBA because he spaces the floor well (36.3%) and can also block shots consistently. Lopez is an impact player on defense yet the Bucks still have a poor defense that ranks 21st in the NBA. If the Bucks give up a ton of points in the playoffs, Lopez could be used as trade bait because he is making $23 million next season.

The Bucks will need to create a Big Three this upcoming offseason if they do not win an NBA title, and they might have to sacrifice Lopez. The big man is nearly 36 years old and it won’t be long before he starts declining on the stat sheet and in terms of on-court impact. If the Bucks want to make the most of Lopez’s value, he could be moved this summer for the right price and the right player.

Bobby Portis - Via Trade

Credit: Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

Contract Status: $12,578,286 In 2024-25, $13,445,754 Player Option In 2025-26

2023-24 Season Statistics: 13.4 PPG, 7.2 RPG, 1.2 APG, 0.8 SPG, 0.4 BPG

Bobby Portis might be one of the players who the Bucks absolutely want to keep because he competes hard on defense, rebounds, and can also score when his number is called. The big man has found a home in Milwaukee and it is expected that he won’t be leaving anytime soon. However, failure in the playoffs could force upper management’s hand to make blockbuster deals this summer.

Portis will demand a ton of attention from every NBA team in the league that needs size and a presence in the paint, and the Bucks could be looking to create a Big Three by all means if they do not win the NBA championship. With a rather team-friendly salary, Portis could be a very valuable trade asset depending on how this season ends for the Bucks.

Pat Connaughton - Via Trade

Credit: Benny Sieu-USA TODAY Sports

Contract Status: $9,423,869 In 2024-25, $9,423,869 Player Option In 2025-26

2023-24 Season Statistics: 5.7 PPG, 3.2 RPG, 1.9 APG, 0.5 SPG, 0.2 BPG

Pat Connaughton has done a great job as a role player for the Bucks because he shoots the three well (37.2%), has supreme athleticism on the break, and moves the ball unselfishly. The problem is that he isn’t scoring the ball well this season and his impact seems to be waning when looking at his previous seasons. The 31-year-old could be moved in a deal, as a result.

Making under $10 million next season and a reasonable player option a year after that, Connaughton could receive some interest from contending teams needing shooting and athleticism on the wing. The Bucks will do whatever it takes to build a top team if they fail in the playoffs, and Connaughton could be a sacrificial lamb.

MarJon Beauchamp - Via Trade

Credit: Benny Sieu-USA TODAY Sports

Contract Status: $2,733,720 In 2024-25, $4,781,276 Team Option In 2025-26, $6,990,226 Qualifying Offer In 2026-27

2023-24 Season Statistics: 4.3 PPG, 2.1 RPG, 0.7 APG, 0.3 SPG, 0.1 BPG

Beauchamp is having a decent season as a role player, averaging 4.3 points per game on 12.9 minutes per game of action. The 23-year-old and former No. 24 overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft still has room to grow, but the Bucks might not have the patience to develop their young talent considering Damian Lillard is nearly 34 years old.

Beauchamp could be used in trade discussions as a trade filler since he is making under $3 million next season but his salary could increase every year after that. The 6’6” small forward has done a decent job in limited minutes so far this season, but don’t expect him to be an untouchable piece.

Free Agency

Patrick Beverley

Credit: Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 5.1 PPG, 2.9 RPG, 2.2 APG, 0.7 SPG, 0.6 BPG

Patrick Beverley always seems to find a home with a title contender or a playoff team because his energy and defensive hustle work well alongside star players. Beverley is the same player everywhere he goes, and it won’t be surprising if he leaves the Bucks to go elsewhere this summer. If the Bucks fail to win a championship and Beverley’s antics do not work in their favor, he could be gone as he searches for the best possible deal in free agency.

Jae Crowder

Credit: Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 6.5 PPG, 3.3 RPG, 1.4 APG, 0.9 SPG, 0.2 BPG

Jae Crowder is a perfect role player for title contenders because he spaces the floor (36.8%), rebounds, and plays above-average defense. He is nearly 34 years old, however, so he might not demand as much money as he has made in years past. The Bucks will happily clear their salary cap if they do not win an NBA title, and Crowder could walk if he gets a better deal elsewhere. Expect the forward to demand a two or three-year deal if possible, otherwise, a minimum deal could be in the cards for him.

Malik Beasley

Credit: Michael McLoone-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 11.4 PPG, 3.9 RPG, 1.4 APG, 0.8 SPG, 0.1 BPG

Malik Beasley can shoot the ball extremely well from deep, as he is posting 11.4 points per game on 43.0% from deep in 68 appearances with the Bucks. The shooting guard has proven that he demands a long-term deal from the Bucks, but there is always a risk he could walk. Beasley is in his prime right now at 27 years old and teams could offer him a significant deal similar to the one he received with the Minnesota Timberwolves. No doubt, this will be an important summer for Beasley concerning his future.

Thanasis Antetokounmpo

Credit: Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 0.9 PPG, 0.4 RPG, 0.5 APG, 0.2 SPG, 0.1 BPG

Thanasis Antetokounmpo is on the Milwaukee Bucks because of his energy and positivity in the locker room. The brother of Giannis, Thanasis probably won’t earn significant minutes come playoff time but he will always be a locker-room glue guy for a title contender. Could his time be up in Milwaukee, however? It is unlikely Thanasis will receive much interest from any other team this summer, so the Bucks could bring him back on a minimum deal or even a two-year deal if his presence demands it.
